Is it still Christmas?

Sunday, 30th December, 2007

I hope anyone reading this had – and is still having – a nice Christmas holiday. Due to an assortment of family commitments, family movies turned up way too loud and all the other delights which accompany the Christmas season, the blog has not been watered a lot recently. Nor will it be until next week. I’m sure you’re both very disappointed to hear that. I have to replace a hard drive in my incredibly and astonishingly full laptop, and also make some tweaks to the website and blog which should hopefully make it a little easier on the eye.  There may be some down time.

I’ll post when I can, but in the meantime, have a good New Year.

Those of you who are familiar with HOW2 will know about the incarnation of Jena Osman’s ongoing “Public Figures” project (set in Flash by me indeed) in the current issue. Well, the ball is rolling with a new contribution by Francis Raven.

ALL readers of HOW2 are encouraged to submit their photos and texts in response to the project. Send em to Lauren Shufran. Come on, you’ll need to walk off the Christmas dinner.

In all honesty, when a company’s marketing strategy is based on whipping up consumer speculation and giddiness, and indeed owes a large degree of its success to it, this is a decidedly bullyish move. Think Secret bullied into oblivion. The cause? Protecting the anonymity of their source.

Crap.

Whitehead Revisited

PennSound also has the archived Whitehead material. Of course, PennSound in general also possesses one of the most comprehensive sound and performance archives on the web.

Thanks to j.henry chunko for further info.

Gregory Whitehead, “We All Scream Alone” (excerpt from “Pressures of the Unspeakable”) at UbuWeb. Such an awesome idea, and I think the Australian commentaries are invaluable to this sound file.

That’s only the tip of the iceberg. There are 53 tracks to enjoy on Whitehead’s UbuWeb page, including the full “Pressures of the Unspeakable” sound file.

Completing the Scroll

Wednesday, 5th December, 2007

Phew. Busy couple of weeks. But I’m finally getting to the stage where I’ve had some time to get writing again.

Anyway for kicks I’m posting up my very first experiments with a new piece of work. The texts use fixed backgrounds and absolutely positioned divs using CSS to give the illusion, when scrolling, of the text, rather than the user’s position on the page, moving. It works best using smooth scrolling (Safari seems to work best for now but that’s something I’ll probably have to work on). It’s already engaging with space in relation to interactivity and with attempting to create some kind of interesting reading strategy. I need to work it out – but the basic material concept is there, and I think I’m onto something. And for me it’s the first exciting start in a while…

Check the idea out if you like:
